Art Workshop “Visual Arts and Street Art”, Place: town of Kardzhali, Art mentor: Galina Dimova

Within the Art Workshop “Visual Arts and Street Art” in the city of Kardzhali, 10 representatives of the Turkish and Roma minority in the city will be included. They will learn various techniques of pencil and watercolor drawing, graphics, illustration and advertising design, textile painting. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of art in public spaces at various civic events, with an emphasis on street art, as well as strict regulations on graffiti culture and the use of spray art in the urban exterior. Graffiti is an emblematic and integral part of urban culture, and this makes it accessible to everyone – connoisseurs and those who want to become part of the creators of this unique art.
As part of the activity of the Art Workshop “Visual Arts and Street Art” in the city of Kardzhali, various techniques for drawing with pencil and watercolor, graphics, illustration and advertising design, drawing on textiles will be learned – depending on interest, previous training and orientation of young artists aged 12 to 18. The art mentor of the workshop will be the artist Galina Dimova, long-time curator of visual projects and head of art workshops for children and youth from Kardzhali, Jebel, Ardino, etc. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of art in public spaces at various civic events, with an emphasis on street art, as well as strict regulations on graffiti culture and the use of spray art in the urban exterior. Graffiti is an emblematic and integral part of urban culture, and this makes it accessible to everyone – connoisseurs and those who want to become part of the creators of this unique art.
The program is implemented within 6 months, with the Visual Arts and Street Art group participating in a week-long program of the Summer Plein Air of the Arts in August ’23.
The trainings in the workshop are held according to a previously developed Program x 2 hours per week /predominantly on Saturdays and Sundays/ – a total of 8 hours per month or 48 hours within the 6 months.

TOPIC 1: Visual Arts

TOPIC 2: Drawing
*Basics of drawing – what is drawing?
*Anatomy and life drawing;
*Different techniques – brief presentation;
*Graphic techniques – letterpress, drypoint, screen printing;
*Pencil and charcoal – demonstrations;
*Watercolor and Tepera/Gouache – demonstrations;
*Drawing with non-radiative materials – wax, spray, on textiles, etc.
*Intuitive drawing – what it is and how to do it;
*Self-expression through drawing – beyond the limitations of traditional skills;
*The role of drawing in contemporary art

TOPIC 3: Illustration
*Illustration Specifics – Introduction
*The telling of stories through visual images;
*Working with a ready-made text or creating an author’s text – how?
*The heroes – who are they and how to breathe life into them from the pages;

Illustration techniques;
*Graphic layout and print preparation;
*Books and illustration – connections and dependencies;
*Types of illustration – children’s book illustration, scientific illustration, etc.

TOPIC 4: Design
*What is design and how it differs from other types of art;

The design – from the beginning to the present day;
*Types of design – advertising, graphic, fashion, interior, web, industrial;
*The relationship between aesthetics and function;
*What role does design play in our current society and why is it needed?

TOPIC 5: Contemporary art
*What is contemporary art?
*How does the development of technology provoke a change in our way of self-expression?;
*New approaches – performance, installations, video and audio recordings;
*Conceptual art – the idea over the need for aesthetics;
*Art as provocation and activism;
*Creating social change through art
*Examples of contemporary authors who work in different directions.

TOPIC 6: Street Art – Street Art:
*Essence – how street art differs from other types of art;
*Visual culture and elements;
*Direct communication with the public;

Art and/or vandalism – limits;
*Art in public spaces;
*Rules and Regulations – When is it allowed?
*Graffiti as a way to improve the urban exterior;

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES: Basic knowledge in the field of visual arts; building basic drawing skills with different techniques and techniques; Orientation in the cultural environment; Acquaintance with various resources; Getting a clearer idea of the work of artists and different artists; provoking interest in contemporary art.
WORKING METHODS: Presentations, educational games, practical classes, Video and photo materials; Demonstrations;

ADDITIONAL WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES:
Drawing with the various techniques shown; An exercise in artistic drawing for the purpose of self-expression – for example, on the theme “Abstract Self-Portrait” with non-traditional materials;
Interpreting a contemporary work of art without the participants having prior knowledge of the concept – an exercise in analysis and critical thinking.
